The Creativities of An Entertaining City That Never Sleeps
Macao, the world's largest gaming city with tourism, entertainment and leisure activities facilitated, has a large number of entertainment resorts. They are opening 24 hours a day and all year round. You can mostly enjoy yourself day and night in it. Here are world-class luxurious resorts, leisure facilities, catering services, entertainment and performances. On the one hand, they have brought new experiences and remarkable memories to tourists. On the other hand, they have also been enhancing the cultural taste of local citizens. No matter which aspect is to be satisfied, content is the most important thing which opens up a skylight for the tiny local design market.
A hundred years ago, everyone could look up at the shining stars at night in this small fishing village. But today, you can only see the splendid hotel exterior wall lights and thousands of household lights at night in this international tourist city. With the advancement of science and technology, maturity of designers’ techniques, and the improvement of their creativities, multimedia can make the unthinkable thinkable and impossible possible.
The term “multimedia” may be transitional. I believe that it will be replaced by another new vocabulary, name or trendy slang in the near future since the term “multimedia” emerging more than a decade ago cannot fully express its creativity and possibility. “Digital creativity” is a more down-to-earth technical term in recent years. However, it literally just means technology and creativity. In the dialogue, the participating designers made a neither new nor old perspective that it can be called STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). Well, why not?
Macao as a city famous for its cultural, entertaining and travelling experience, there are a large number of cultural promotion performances every year. Since the first projection mapping show created by a Spanish team was staged at the Ruins of Saint Paul’s, Macau’s best known landmark, in Macao Arts Festival 2013, as well as The Historic Centre of Macao was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, outdoor performance over world heritage sites had become another feature of Macao.
In 2015, Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau cooperated with the Macau Designers Association and hired a Spanish team to organize training courses with iCentre. Since then, a number of local designers with international visions and technologies have been cultivated. In the next few years, local projection mapping designers’ works could be seen in government or private enterprise projects.
Since the Macao Light Festival 2016, more opportunities were given to Macau projection mapping designers to showcase their talents. In the past five years, many companies and teams from Macao have won many awards in the international projection mapping competitions in Japan, Germany, Chile and other places, thus their capabilities have been proven internationally.
This exhibition will display 18 works from six design companies, including three themes: (1) performance of outdoor projection mapping, (2) projection mapping performance, (3) projection mapping and multimedia exhibition, all works selected are around the theme of Digital and Art.
Thank you for the invitation of the hosts and co-organizers. I hope that all of you would have a deeper understanding of the digital creative teams in Macao through this exhibition, I am very much looking forward to having more opportunities to cooperate with you in order to expand the markets and develop creative spaces together in the near future!
